With two devices attached then it goes through the shorter repeat sequence described in the first paragraph :( With no USB devices attached it does get to the Debian installer screen, but clearly this is no good to me with no USB devices attached. On my 400mHz Pismo, with a disk in a USB 2.0/ Firewire 400 case, it runs at the same sustained speed with either firewire or USB (which runs at the Pismo's real world use (a rough estimate is about half). there's simply no way that usb 1 could be anywhere close to the speed of scsi, even under ideal conditions.

Bug in Mandrake 10 - no USB wheelmouse support
If it does _not_ have the latter - you are screwed. I'm 99% sure there's no way of giving a pre-cardbus machine USB capability. If you _do_ have cardbus, just get a cardbus -> USB adapter (many brands around). Watch out for power issues. There are parallel and serial to USB adapters. Neither is expensive.

If so, have him remove the USB-to-PS/2 adapter from the keyboard and use the PS/2 port (be sure he plugs it in the one for the keyboard and not the mouse since the connectors are identical). If there is no USB-to-PS/2 adapter (because it is a USB-only keyboard), get another keyboard which does have a PS/2 connector

SO, no full-speed capability from my external hard drive. The probeall lines I have in modules.conf have device names where you have "usb-interface". That may work properly, or not. I tend to modprobe all the things I need at boot time with /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 to avoid weirdnesses though. Does lsmod show that uhci-hcd and ehci-hcd are loaded? No.
